Pansy plants are cheerful, blooming flowers, among the first of the season to offer winter colour in many areas. The garden pansy is a large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. Growing pansies are commonly seen in late fall and early spring. It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium of the genus Viola, particularly Viola tricolour.
